Cover Letter Examples UK: 3 Letters to Adapt

By the Personal Job Coach team

The three letters below were written for specific job adverts by people with ordinary careers: someone changing employer without changing job, a graduate looking for a first permanent role, and someone ready to lead a team for the first time. All three start with the advert, give evidence with numbers, and finish with the practical details.

The employers are fictional. Read each letter for its method, then rewrite it around your own background.

Example 1: Same Job, New Employer

Ross has coordinated events at a university for six years and is applying to a conference and wedding venue, writing to the operations manager by name.

Ross Kerr Bradford Ms Laura Whitfield Operations Manager, Calder Mill Conference Centre 14 October 2026 Dear Ms Whitfield, Your advert for an Events Coordinator mentions that Calder Mill hosts around 300 events a year, many of them repeat bookings from the same corporate clients. Keeping clients coming back is the part of event work I've become best at over the last six years, and I'd like to do it for a venue rather than a university. I coordinate conferences, receptions and external hires across four buildings at a university in Bradford, which came to about 140 events last academic year. I'm the client's contact from first enquiry to final invoice, and I wrote the feedback survey we now send after every booking. When I noticed we were hiring projectors and microphones for almost every event, I made the case for buying our own: the kit paid for itself in eight months and saved £18,000 over the year. Weddings would be new to me, and I know they bring their own pressures. What carries over is the planning, the supplier management and staying calm when a coach full of delegates arrives an hour early. I'm on a one-month notice period. I'd be glad to visit the venue and talk about the role whenever suits you. Yours sincerely, Ross Kerr

Why This Letter Works

Ross opens with a detail from the advert, repeat corporate bookings, and answers it with the skill that matters most for it. The equipment story shows initiative and has a number attached, which turns "commercially aware" into something the reader can check at interview.

The gap, weddings, is named plainly and followed straight away by what transfers. Because the letter is addressed to Ms Whitfield by name, it closes with "Yours sincerely".

Example 2: First Permanent Role After a Degree

Aisha has just graduated in Geography and is applying for a graduate transport planner role at a consultancy, without a named contact.

Aisha Rahman BA Geography, Leicester Brindley & Shaw Recruitment Team 21 October 2026 Dear Sir or Madam, Your advert says graduate transport planners spend their first year on data collection and modelling for local authority bus projects. My dissertation was about exactly that kind of question, and I'm applying for a permanent graduate role in your Nottingham team. For my dissertation I looked at why passenger numbers on two Leicester bus routes recovered at different speeds after 2020. I surveyed 310 passengers at stops over three weeks, mapped where they were travelling from in QGIS, and found that the slower route had lost most of its commuters to hybrid working while the faster one served a hospital. It was awarded a first. For the last two years I've also worked weekend shifts at a cinema, where I learned to keep a queue of eighty people moving when the card machine stops working. I'd like to start my career somewhere I can follow a project from survey to recommendation, and your work on bus priority schemes across the East Midlands is the kind of project I mean. I graduated in July and can start straight away. I'd welcome the chance to discuss the role at interview. Yours faithfully, Aisha Rahman

Why This Letter Works

Aisha has no planning experience yet, so the dissertation does the work of a first job: a clear question, a method, real data and a finding. Mentioning QGIS by name tells the reader she can use the tools from day one.

The cinema job is short but relevant, since a planner deals with the public too. With no name to write to, the letter opens with "Dear Sir or Madam" and closes with "Yours faithfully", the pairing UK employers still expect.

Example 3: First Team Leader Role

Callum has worked night shifts in a distribution centre for five years and is applying for a night shift team leader role at an online grocer.

Callum Reid Daventry Mr Owen Hughes Shift Manager, Fenwood Fresh 4 November 2026 Dear Mr Hughes, Your advert for a Night Shift Team Leader asks for someone who can hit pick rates without losing people after peak. I've worked nights in a distribution centre in Daventry for five years, and for the last two peaks I've been the person new starters are sent to. During the 2025 peak I trained 11 new starters on the pick and pack lines, and nine of them were still with us in February. I'm also our shift's health and safety rep, so I run the weekly walkway and racking checks and give the toolbox talks when something goes wrong. My own pick accuracy has stayed above 99.6% for the past year, but the number I'm proudest of is that none of the people I trained had a reportable accident. I haven't led a team on paper yet, and I know that going from colleague to team leader changes how people talk to you. I'd like to learn that in a business that's growing, and your new chilled area opening next spring is a good reason to apply now. I'm available for interview any weekday afternoon. Yours sincerely, Callum Reid

Why This Letter Works

Someone stepping up for the first time has to show they've already done parts of the job. Callum does it with training, safety responsibility and retention figures, all of which are a team leader's real work, rather than with words like "natural leader".

The letter is open about the jump from colleague to supervisor, which reads as self-awareness rather than weakness. The closing detail about the new chilled area shows he has read up on the employer.

Why an Example Isn't Enough

Each of these letters works because it answers one specific advert with one person's background. Copied under your name, Ross's letter still describes Ross: the four university buildings, the equipment business case, the £18,000. Published examples are read by plenty of applicants, and people who hire regularly start recognising the same sentences.

Tailoring a letter means rebuilding it from two things no example knows about. First the advert: the tasks, its exact wording, what the employer does and what it expects from the person it hires. If the advert says "client retention", don't write "customer service". Then your profile: your own evidence, chosen because it answers that advert, and why this role is the right next step for you now.

That's what our cover letter generator does: it starts from your CV and the job advert you paste in, and writes a letter for that advert.

How to Use a Cover Letter Example

Take an example for its structure, not its sentences. The three letters on this page follow the same order: a detail from the advert to open, one or two pieces of evidence with numbers, what you want to bring or learn in the role, then the practical details. Keep that order, swap every piece of evidence for one of your own, and use the language of the advert you're answering. A useful test is to reread each sentence and ask whether it could go to another employer unchanged. If it could, it's still too general.

Examples for an Internship

If you're applying for a summer internship, a placement year or an internship after a master's, our internship cover letter examples show what changes while you're still studying: your dates, where you can work and what you want to learn.
