Are Canva CVs ATS Friendly? What We Tested and What the Sources Say

By Personal Job Coach team

A Canva CV is not a problem in itself. What decides whether an ATS can read it is the layout you picked and the way you exported the file, and both are in your hands.

This guide keeps three things apart: what Canva documents, what ATS vendors document and what we measured ourselves. None of the ATS pages we read mention Canva by name and we have not tested a Canva CV inside a live ATS, so we can't promise a pass, but we can show where the real risks sit.

What Does Canva Say About Its Own PDFs?

Canva's help pages say that a PDF downloaded with the Digital preset and the Flatten PDF box left unticked carries accessibility tags, and that the reading order is calculated automatically on export, which Canva says works best for simple, linear layouts. The same pages say that flattening converts the file into a static image and removes those tags. A standard export therefore keeps your text as text, and a flattened one does not. Canva's own French-language page on ATS CV templates adds that the layout should stay simple, with clear headings and few graphic elements.

What Happened When We Tested Canva PDFs?

We built two fictional CVs in Canva from free templates, one with a single column and one with two, and exported both as standard PDFs (Digital preset, Flatten PDF unticked). Our parser, the one behind CV Score, extracted all of the text from both files. In the single-column file the text came out in reading order. In the two-column file, lines from the left and right columns ran together on the same line, which is the column problem Textkernel describes. When we re-saved the two-column file with another tool, which removed the Canva label from its metadata, it read the same way, so the cause was the two columns and not Canva. That is two files and one export option, and it tests our own parser rather than an ATS, so take it as a demonstration of the mechanism and not as a pass rate.

What Do ATS Vendors Say Causes Parsing Problems?

Greenhouse lists the causes of a failed resume parse in its support pages: graphics, photos or word art, tables, headers and footers, a name and contact details placed in a header, footer or text box, a columned layout, and a resume uploaded as an image instead of a document. Oracle Taleo says in its release notes that a resume in an image format is not parsed. Textkernel, which makes parsing software, calls column CVs a surprisingly difficult problem, estimates that at least 15% of CVs use columns, and says it has improved its own results on them. None of these causes is specific to Canva: they all sit inside the file, whichever tool made it.

Which Canva Template Choices Carry the Risk?

Four choices match the causes on those vendor lists, and a Canva template can include any of them: a sidebar, which is a two-column layout; a photo or icons next to your contact details; contact details in a text box or a header; and an export with Flatten PDF ticked. A template with one column of text, plain section headings and no photo avoids all four.

How Do You Export a Canva CV an ATS Can Read?

  1. Pick a single-column template, or delete the sidebar and move its content into the main column.
  2. Put your name and contact details in the main body of the page, not in a header or a text box.
  3. Download as a PDF, choose the Digital preset and leave Flatten PDF unticked.
  4. Open the PDF, select all the text with your cursor and paste it into a plain text editor. If the words come out in the wrong order, or don't come out at all, a parser can struggle too.

What Does CV Score Do With a Canva File?

It treats it like any other PDF. CV Score extracts the text, checks the layout for columns and scores the format criterion on that alone: full marks for a single column, half for columns. It doesn't look at which tool made the file. If it can't extract enough readable text, which is what an image-only PDF gives, it tells you so instead of giving a score. Run your exported PDF through the CV Score tool before you send it anywhere.
